Which assistant did that thread name?

A customer says the answer came from the policy assistant, or says the bot that replied was a different one. Do not treat the reply as something an assistant produced, and do not ask the model which assistant it was, until three proofs are in a log you stored. Name the assistant that thread named: the assistant id, the model, and the name. If the run stored no assistant, write that, and do not invent a name to fill the hole. Show a different assistant whose id, or whose name, is not this one. Show another thread that does not hold this assistant. If any of the three is a recollection instead of a stored object, you have not named the assistant. You have a sentence and a guess.

This is the assistant on one thread. It is not the model string alone. Name the model the request hit is the model identifier on a call. Two assistants can name the same model and still be different ids, and one assistant can be renamed while the model stays put. It is not the file. Which file did that message attach? is the file id and the byte count on a message. A file can exist while no assistant lists it. It is not the store. Which store did that file join? is the vector store a file was attached to. A store id is not an assistant id. It is not the run by itself. Which run did that thread start? is the run id and the status. A run can be completed while you still have not copied the assistant id it stored. It is not the tax on an invoice, and it is not the comment on a review. Those are different objects, and they are not this id.

None of what follows is a score for this product, and none of it is legal advice. The fields below are one vendor's current description of an assistant, and the samples reuse an id without being the same object. The counts below that are a 2024 benchmark of other people's web tasks. A name on an example is not a census of your assistants. A paper that scored agents on public websites cannot name the assistant on the thread you stored tonight. They do tell you which numbers people mix up when they try to sound precise about a bot they have not opened.

OpenAI's list example returns three assistants, and the curl that asks for them sets limit to 20. The first id is asst_abc123. 11 characters. created_at is 1698982736. name is Coding Tutor. 12 characters. instructions are You are a helpful assistant designed to make me better at coding! 65 characters. tools is an empty array. The second id is asst_abc456. Also 11 characters. created_at is 1698982718. name is My Assistant. Also 12 characters, and not the same string. The instructions are the same 65 characters. 1698982736 minus 1698982718 is 18 seconds. The third id is asst_abc789. created_at is 1698982643. name is null. instructions are null. 1698982718 minus 1698982643 is 75 seconds. 18 plus 75 is 93, which is the gap from the null name to Coding Tutor, and the page does not print 93. The list holds 3 objects. 3 is not 20. has_more is false. first_id is asst_abc123. last_id is asst_abc789. The schema example on the same page sets last_id to asst_abc456 while has_more is false. 456 is not 789. Do not treat a shared prefix as one assistant (OpenAI, Assistants).

The create examples reuse asst_abc123 and do not reuse the list object's clock or its name. The math-tutor response has id asst_abc123, created_at 1698984975, name Math Tutor. 10 characters. 10 is not 12. model is gpt-4.1. 7 characters. The instructions are You are a personal math tutor. When asked a question, write and run Python code to answer the question. 103 characters. tools holds one object, type code_interpreter. The response does not print tool_resources. 1698984975 minus the list object's 1698982736 is 2239 seconds. 37 times 60 is 2220, and the remainder is 19, so the gap is 37 minutes and 19 seconds. Same id string, later clock, different name. The HR create response is also id asst_abc123, created_at 1699009403, name HR Helper. 9 characters. The instructions are 100 characters, the sentence that ends at company policies. tools holds file_search. tool_resources.file_search.vector_store_ids is vs_123. 6 characters. The request that page shows does not send a name. The response prints HR Helper anyway. 1699009403 minus 1698984975 is 24428 seconds. 6 times 3600 is 21600, and the remainder is 2828. 2828 is 47 minutes and 8 seconds. The gap is 6 hours, 47 minutes, and 8 seconds. Two creates and one list row, one id string, three names. They are not one assistant.

Retrieve and modify split that id string again. Retrieve of asst_abc123 returns created_at 1699009709, name HR Helper, and the 100-character instructions. It does not print tool_resources. 1699009709 minus the HR create's 1699009403 is 306 seconds. 5 times 60 is 300, and the remainder is 6, so the gap is 5 minutes and 6 seconds. The create stored vs_123. The retrieve of the same id string does not. Do not paste the vector store onto the retrieve because the name matches. The modify request is sent to asst_abc123 and the instructions in that request are 152 characters, the longer sentence that adds Always response with info from either of the files. The modify response id is asst_123. 8 characters. 8 is not 11. created_at is 1699009709, the same integer as the retrieve, on a different id. The instructions in the response are the 152-character sentence, not the 100-character one. vector_store_ids is an empty array. Empty is not vs_123. 152 is not 100. A timestamp match is not an id match. The delete placeholder prints id as the string id. 2 characters. object is assistant.deleted. The other delete curl addresses asst_abc123. 2 is not 11.

The caps on the object are a different scale from a benchmark score. instructions maximum length is 256,000 characters. 103 is not 256,000. 256,000 divided by the 100-character HR sentence is 2,560 exactly. The page does not print 2,560. name maximum is 256. Math Tutor is 10. 256 divided by 10 is 25.6, which is not a whole name. description maximum is 512. The samples set description to null. 512 is not 256. metadata is at most 16 pairs, keys at most 64 characters, values at most 512. The samples store an empty object. 0 is not 16. tools maximum is 128. The math tutor has 1. The list objects have 0. 1 is not 128. code_interpreter file_ids maximum is 20. file_search vector stores maximum is 1. vs_123 is one id, which is the maximum count, and the modify response stores zero. 0 is not 1. temperature runs from 0 to 2, and the samples print 1.0. 1.0 is not 2. top_p runs from 0 to 1, and the samples print 1.0, which is the top of that range. File search max_num_results defaults to 20 for gpt-4 models and 5 for gpt-3.5-turbo, and must sit between 1 and 50. 20 is not 5. The samples use gpt-4.1 and do not print max_num_results. A default you did not read is not a field you may invent.

The benchmark people quote when they want a score about assistants did not open this thread. Ori Yoran, Samuel Joseph Amouyal, Chaitanya Malaviya, Ben Bogin, Ofir Press, and Jonathan Berant present AssistantBench: 214 realistic tasks. The abstract, the introduction, and the conclusion each say no model reaches an accuracy of more than 26 points. An appendix prints SPA combined with a closed-book model at 26.4. 26.4 is more than 26. The body says their agent outperforms SeeAct by about 7 points, and that its precision is 5 points higher. The Claude appendix says the same agent outperforms SeeAct by 10 points. 10 is not 7. 5 is not 7. They collected a seed of 72 tasks from 18 participants, and a later paragraph says 70 tasks from 18 users. 72 is not 70. The difference is 2. Crowdworkers added 102 tasks. 70 plus 102 is 172, which is the expanded total they print. 72 plus 102 is 174. 174 is not 172. The expert set is 42 tasks. 172 plus 42 is 214. That addition matches the later paragraph and does not rescue the 72 (Yoran et al., AssistantBench).

The same paper's people, pages, and error shares are checkable, and they are still not an assistant id. They say the 214 tasks came from 53 different people, 35 of them domain experts. 53 minus 35 is 18, which matches the participant count in the seed and does not decide between 70 and 72. The development set is 33 tasks, 12 from the seed and 21 from crowdworkers. 12 plus 21 is 33. That addition matches. 214 minus 33 is 181. That paragraph does not print 181. Answers sit across 525 web pages on 258 websites. 525 divided by 258 is 2.03, and the page does not print 2.03. Navigation errors are 60% of SeeAct's errors and 37% of SPA's. 60 minus 37 is 23. 60 is not 37. Closed-book models generate hallucinated facts in 85% of their errors. Retrieval failures are 80% of the errors for retrieval-augmented models. 85 is not 80. 85 is not 26, and 26.4 is not 85. A related-work sentence mentions a filtered set of 90 GAIA web tasks, and another mentions 14 websites in a different benchmark. 90 is not 214. 14 is not 258. Tasks allow up to five answers. 5 is not 214. None of these cells is asst_abc123, and none of them is the empty tool list on asst_abc789.

Do the three proofs on one real thread, in the log that actually holds it. First, the binding. Copy the assistant id, the model, and the name. If the run stored no assistant id, write that. Do not infer asst_abc123 because four samples print it, and do not infer Math Tutor or HR Helper or Coding Tutor because a sample name prints it. If two responses share the id string and not the created_at, write both clocks. 1698984975 is not 1699009403, and neither is 1699009709. If the modify response id is not the id in the request URL, write both. asst_123 is not asst_abc123. Second, the other assistant. A different assistant, with a different id or a different name, is not this one. asst_abc456 and asst_abc789 are that shape on the list sample, and they are still samples. A benchmark of 214 tasks is not that second assistant. If you cannot show an assistant that is not this one, you have a counter, not a record. Third, the other thread. A thread that belongs to someone else does not name this assistant on this run. If the only log is a single shared table and you cannot say whose thread it is, write that. A tenant you cannot name is the finding. It is not a reason to tell the customer the reply came from HR Helper.

Three moves feel like the proof and are a second problem. Pasting a name into the reply because the run's assistant field was empty, and then describing the missing id as a persona. Quoting 26 because it looks precise, while the thread you were asked about is one row, and the study that printed 26 also printed 26.4. Asking the model which assistant it was. The model will pick a plausible name. It will not open the run. A file you have not kept, while the customer is arguing about which upload was searched, is which file did that message attach?. Opening that screen does not name the assistant.

The path is ordinary when an operator can open one customer's documents without opening the next customer's documents as the way to prove it. Haystack is one search layer across documents, data lakes, and repositories. The shape that matters here is one customer's thread you can point at, distinct from the next customer's thread. That case is not an assistant ledger. Nothing in the description is a headcount, a duration, or a result figure. If the only control on the screen returns a paragraph and will not name an assistant id, you do not have this proof. You have a sentence.

There is a version of this afternoon where hiring the path is the wrong purchase. Nothing is in production, because the feature has not reached a customer. No model is being called. The request was not logged, so there is no thread to name. A customer has already seen another customer's assistant, or another customer's files. Naming an id does not close a leak. The wrong value was already a write. Or no metric was ever named, so a rescue would have nothing to move. The criteria for a system that is already in front of customers and still cannot show the assistant sit on the page for an AI pilot failed to reach production. That page is the symptom. It does not name this thread, and it does not turn 26 into an assistant id.

When the reply is already in front of a customer and the log cannot name the assistant, the missing object is specific. The assistant id, the model, and the name, a different assistant that is not that one, and a stored run rather than a recollection. An AI pilot failed to reach production engagement is for the system that is already in front of customers and cannot yet show those three: audit in the first one to two weeks, finished in 8 to 12 weeks, scoped after the audit, unpaid if the agreed metric does not move, rollout behind a human-review gate. The assistant you failed to store tonight is the kind of case the harness has to include, or the next release will name a persona and still be unable to say which assistant ran. The harness is AI evaluation and observability. An AI integration sprint is the shape where the acceptance sentence can require the assistant id on every stored run. If you do not yet know whether the pilot can be saved, a two-week AI readiness assessment hands you the findings either way. The free production-readiness diagnostic is the short way to see whether you are looking at a missing assistant, a reused sample id, or a system that has not reached a customer. Those are the terms. They are not 26, and they are not 26.4.

The tax an invoice added, and the comment a review left, are different objects: which tax did that invoice add? and which comment did that review leave?. Do not record either on this page. A percentage is not an assistant id. A line number is not a model. The chunk a search returned is a different object: which chunk did that search return?. Do not record it here. A file id is not an assistant id.

Before you tell them the policy assistant wrote the answer, do the three proofs and write the ids. Name the assistant, the model, and the name, or write that the run stored no assistant. Show a different assistant that is not that one. Show another thread that does not hold it. Do not ask the model which assistant it was, and do not cite a benchmark in place of the id. A paper can tell you how a benchmark scored other web tasks, including the ceiling that does not match its own appendix. The binding is the assistant you can defend.

Questions

You stop treating the reply as something an assistant produced, and you stop asking the model which assistant it was, until you can name the assistant id, the model, and the name, show a different assistant whose id or name is not this one, and show that you stored the run. If the run stored no assistant, write that.

No. A score on other people's web tasks is not the id on this run. An assistant you can defend is the id, the model, and the name, or a written line that the run stored none. 26 on one abstract is not asst_abc123, and 26.4 in an appendix is not a name.

When nothing is in production, when no model is being called, when the request was not logged, when a customer has already seen another customer's data, when the wrong value was already a write, or when no metric was ever named.
