Do not treat a shortened transcript as the compact the response made, and do not ask the model which summary it kept, until you can name the compact. Tonight, three proofs, in a log you stored. Name the compact that response made: the id, the object type, and the usage total, or a written line that the log stored no compaction. Show a different compact whose id, or whose total, is not this one, even when the id string matches. Show another response that does not hold this compact. If any of the three needs the person who wired the model, you have not named the compact. You have a shorter paragraph and a guess.
This is a compaction object. It is not the output item a response held. Which output did that response hold? is an item id, a type, and a status. A message item can sit beside a compaction item, and the sentence is not the compact. It is not the usage a successful response billed. Name the tokens the response billed is the usage object on one call. A token count can tell two compacts apart and still not be the compact id. It is not the detail a response omitted. Which detail did that response omit? is an incomplete reason. A null incomplete field is not an encrypted summary. It is not the grant a customer held. Which grant did that customer hold? is a grant id. It is not the asset a release attached. Which asset did that release attach? is a filename. A shortened chat is none of those.
None of what follows is a price for this product, and none of it is legal advice. The objects below are examples on one vendor's responses reference. Two of them share an id and do not share a usage total. The figures after that are a 2025 report about other people's investment. A billion dollars of other people's funding is not the compact in the log you opened tonight.
The completed example people reach from the cancel curl is a response, and it is not a compaction. The id is resp_67ccd3a9da748190baa7f1570fe91ac604becb25c45c1d41. 53 characters. object is response. 8 characters. 8 is not 53. created_at is 1741476777. completed_at is 1741476778. The gap is 1 second. status is completed. model is gpt-6-astra. 11 characters. usage.input_tokens is 328. cached_tokens is 0. cache_write_tokens is 0. output_tokens is 52. reasoning_tokens is 0. total_tokens is 380. 328 plus 52 is 380. That addition matches. 0 cached tokens are not a missing usage object. tool_usage.image_gen prints 0 on every token field, and web_search.num_requests is 0. A zero tool count is not the 380. The output message id is msg_67ccd3acc8d48190a77525dc6de64b4104becb25c45c1d41. 52 characters. 53 minus 52 is 1. The content type is output_text. 11 characters, the same length as the model string, and not the same string. The text is a landscape of 267 characters and 45 words. The page does not print 267 or 45. The same object also prints an output_text field whose value is the string output_text. 11 characters again. That field is not the landscape. temperature is 1. service_tier is auto. conversation.id is the literal string id. A placeholder is not a conversation you can open. The curl above this JSON posts to /responses/$RESPONSE_ID/cancel. The JSON it sits on has status completed, not cancelled. A cancel request whose sample body is a completed response has not shown you a compaction (OpenAI, The response object).
The cancel example that actually says cancelled is a different response, and its usage is null. The id is resp_67cb71b351908190a308f3859487620d06981a8637e6bc44. Also 53 characters, and not the completed id. created_at is 1741386163. 1741476777 minus 1741386163 is 90614 seconds: 1 day, 1 hour, 10 minutes, and 14 seconds. The page does not print that gap. status is cancelled. background is true. completed_at is null. usage is null. A null usage is not 0, and it is not 380. The message id is msg_67cb71b3c2b0819084d481baaaf148f206981a8637e6bc44. Also 52 characters, and not the completed message id. The message status is in_progress. The response status is cancelled. in_progress is not cancelled. temperature is 1.0. The completed sample prints 1. 1.0 is not the characters 1. model is again gpt-6-astra. A shared model is not a shared id. The text is the haiku the page prints with two backslash-n escapes. The characters between the quotes, as the page shows them, number 80. The page does not print 80. 80 is not 267. A cancelled response with a null usage is not a compact, and it is not the completed response one day later.
The first compaction sample is a different object type, and its usage is not 380. The id is resp_001. 8 characters, the same length as the object name response, and not that string. object is response.compaction. 19 characters. 19 is not 8. created_at is 1731459200. 1741476777 minus 1731459200 is 10017577 seconds: 115 days, 22 hours, 39 minutes, and 37 seconds. The page does not print that gap. input_tokens is 42897. output_tokens is 12000. reasoning_tokens is 0. total_tokens is 54897. 42897 plus 12000 is 54897. That addition matches. 54897 is not 380. The output includes msg_001, msg_002, and a compaction item cmp_001. cmp_001 is 7 characters. encrypted_content is the string encrypted-summary. 17 characters. 17 is not 7. A label that says the summary is encrypted is not the ciphertext of a customer conversation. The user text on msg_001 is Summarize our launch checklist from last week. That sentence is not the compact. The compact is the item whose type is compaction.
The second compaction sample reuses resp_001 and does not reuse the usage. created_at is 1764967971. 1764967971 minus 1741476777 is 23491194 seconds: 271 days, 21 hours, 19 minutes, and 54 seconds. 1764967971 minus 1731459200 is 33508771 seconds: 387 days, 19 hours, 59 minutes, and 31 seconds. The page does not print either gap. object is again response.compaction. input_tokens is 139. output_tokens is 438. reasoning_tokens is 64. total_tokens is 577. 139 plus 438 is 577. That addition matches. 438 minus 64 is 374. The page does not print 374. If you add the reasoning tokens on top of the output tokens, 139 plus 438 plus 64 is 641. 641 is not 577. Reasoning tokens in this sample are inside the output count, not a third pile. 577 is not 54897, and 577 is not 380. The user text in the request is Create a simple landing page for a dog petting café. 52 characters. The stored text is Create a simple landing page for a dog petting cafe. Also 52 characters. The accent is gone. Same length is not the same string. The output ids are msg_000 and cmp_001. cmp_001 appears in both compaction samples. A shared item id, on two objects that share resp_001 and do not share created_at or total_tokens, is not one compact. The page printed the same id twice. That is the second proof that an id string is not the usage. Do not merge them because both say resp_001.
A model name does not repair the merge. Both compaction samples and both response samples print gpt-6-astra. 11 characters. Four objects, one model string, three usage shapes: 380, null, 54897, and 577. The reference says the model parameter is gpt-6-astra or 107 more. 107 is not 4, and 107 is not 11. A menu of models is not the model field on this response. resp_001 is 8 characters. The completed response id is 53. 8 is not 53. A short sample id is not a reason to treat every short id as the same compact. output_text as a field value, output_text as a content type, and gpt-6-astra are three strings of length 11. Length is not identity.
The investment totals people quote when they want a model budget did not open this compact. The Stanford Institute for Human-Centered AI, in the 2025 AI Index, says corporate AI investment reached $252.3 billion in 2024, and the highlight calls the growth 26 percent. The same report's investment section says the total grew to $252.3 billion, an increase of 25.5 percent from 2023. 26 is not 25.5. The highlight says private investment climbed 44.5 percent and mergers and acquisitions 12.1 percent, and that investment grew more than thirteenfold since 2014. The body says nearly thirteenfold. More than is not nearly. U.S. private AI investment was $109.1 billion, which the highlight calls nearly 12 times China's $9.3 billion and 24 times the U.K.'s $4.5 billion. The body says the $109.1 billion was 11.7 times greater than China's $9.3 billion. 11.7 is not 12. 9.3 times 11.7 is 108.81, not 109.1. 9.3 times 12 is 111.6, not 109.1. 109.1 divided by 9.3 begins 11.731. The page does not print 11.731, 108.81, or 111.6. 109.1 divided by 4.5 begins 24.244. 4.5 times 24 is 108, not 109.1. 24.244 is not 24. The page does not print 24.244. Generative AI private investment was $33.9 billion, up 18.7 percent from 2023, and over 8.5 times 2022. 33.9 divided by 8.5 begins 3.988. The page does not print 3.988, and over 8.5 times is not a license to treat 3.988 as a printed 2022 total. 33.9 divided by 252.3 begins 0.1344. The highlight says generative AI is more than 20 percent of AI-related private investment. 13.44 percent of the corporate total is not that sentence, because $252.3 billion is corporate investment, not the private denominator. The page does not print the private total next to the 20 percent. 78 percent of organizations reported using AI in 2024, up from 55 percent. 78 divided by 55 begins 1.418. The page does not print 1.418. None of these is total_tokens 577, and none of them is resp_001 (Stanford Institute for Human-Centered AI, Economy, 2025 AI Index, and Artificial Intelligence Index Report 2025).
One table in that report does add, and the addition still is not a compact. Figure 4.3.7 prints global AI private investment events by size. For 2023 the cells are 9, 9, 134, 200, 2,945, and 680, and the total is 3,977. 9 plus 9 plus 134 plus 200 plus 2,945 plus 680 is 3,977. For 2024 the cells are 15, 20, 143, 196, 2,945, and 207, and the total is 3,526. 15 plus 20 plus 143 plus 196 plus 2,945 plus 207 is 3,526. The under-50 million row is 2,945 in both years. A row that does not change is not a reason to add the years together. 3,977 plus 3,526 is 7,503. The page does not print 7,503. 15 events over $1 billion are not $109.1 billion, and 3,526 events are not 577 tokens. A table that adds is still a table about other people's financings.
Do the three proofs on one real compact, in the log that actually holds it. First, the binding. Copy the id, the object type, the created_at, and the usage total. If object is response, write response, and write that this is not a compaction. If usage is null, write null. Do not write 0. If two rows share resp_001, write both created times and both totals. Do not keep one because the id matched. If the stored sentence dropped an accent, write the stored sentence. Second, the other compact. A different total, even with the same id string, is not this one. 54897 and 577 are that shape in the samples, and they are still samples. A cancelled response with a null usage is not that second compact. An investment total is not that second compact. Third, the other response. A log that belongs to another customer does not contain this id. If the only store is one shared transcript and you cannot say whose compact it is, write that. A tenant you cannot name is the finding.
Three moves feel like the proof and are a second problem. Sending the shortened text back as if it were the original, and then describing the missing turns as a cleanup. The compaction item is encrypted_content or it is not stored. A sentence you can read is not proof of which turns were dropped. Adding reasoning tokens on top of output tokens because both are integers. On the second sample that sum is 641, and the printed total is 577. Quoting $109.1 billion or 78 percent because they look precise, while the compact you were asked about is one object, and the report that printed them had already used 26 and 25.5 for one growth rate and 12 and 11.7 for one multiple. Asking the model which summary it kept. The model will continue the café. It will not open the object. The tokens a response billed are name the tokens the response billed. Opening that usage does not name this compaction id.
The path is ordinary when an operator can open one user's transcript without opening the next user's transcript as the way to prove it. Inflectiv Helios is a multi-assistant platform: one conversation history per user, distinct from the next user's history. The shape that matters here is one conversation you can point at, in a log you stored, distinct from the next conversation. That case is not a compaction ledger. Nothing in that sentence is a headcount, a duration, or a result figure. If the only control on the screen shortens every user's history together, you do not have this proof. You have a summary banner.
There is a version of this afternoon where a rescue is the wrong purchase. Nothing is in production. No model is being called. The request was not logged. A customer has already seen another customer's compact. The wrong value was already a write. Or no metric was ever named. None of those is a missing compaction id. $33.9 billion will not become your usage because the report was precise, and resp_001 will not become your id because the sample was short.
When the reply is already in front of a customer and the log cannot name the compact, the missing object is specific. A record you stored, that shows one id, one object type, and one usage total or an explicit null, shows a different compact that is not that one, and shows another response that does not hold it. An AI pilot failed to reach production engagement is for the system that is already in front of customers and cannot yet show those three. The audit is one to two weeks. The engagement is 8–12 weeks, scoped after the audit. If the agreed metric is not hit, the build is on us: you do not pay for it. Rollout sits behind a human-review gate. The triple you wrote tonight is the kind of case the harness has to include, or the next release will be just as short and just as unattached to an id. The harness is AI evaluation and observability. If you do not yet know whether the pilot can be saved, a two-week AI readiness assessment hands you the findings either way. The findings are yours. They are not a promise that 78 percent of organizations will match this log.
Before you tell them which compact the response made, do the three proofs and write the id. Name the id, the object type, and the usage total, or write that usage was null, or write that no compaction was stored. Show a different compact that is not that one, even if the id string matches. Show another response that does not hold it. Do not paste 577 onto a row whose total is 54897, and do not paste 11.7 onto a sentence that printed 12. The binding is the compact you can defend.
Questions
You stop treating a shortened transcript as the compact the response made, and you stop asking the model which summary it kept, until you can name the id, the object type, and the usage total, show a different compact whose id or total is not this one, and show that another response does not hold it. If the log stored no compaction, write that.
No. A total of other people's funding is not the usage on this compact. A compact you can defend is the id, the object type, and the usage total, or a written line that usage was null. 109.1 billion is not 577, and a shared resp_001 is not one total.
When nothing is in production, when no model is being called, when the request was not logged, when a customer has already seen another customer's data, when the wrong value was already a write, or when no metric was ever named.
