Do not treat the reply as something a run appended, and do not ask the model which message it was, until you can name the message. Tonight, three proofs, in a log you stored. Name the message that run appended: the message id, the role, and the text. If the run id on the message is null, write null. Show a different message whose id, or whose text, is not this one. Show another thread that does not hold this message. If any of the three needs the person who wired the assistant, you have not named the message. You have a paragraph and a guess.
This is the message. It is not the run. Which run did that thread start? is the run id, the status, and the assistant. A run can complete while this message stores a null run id, and a run id is not a message id. It is not the file. Which file did that message attach? is a file id, a purpose, and a byte count. An empty attachment list is not a missing message. It is not the model. Name the model the request hit is the model string on a call. A model name is not a message id. It is not the intent a charge opened, and it is not the check a commit reported. Those are different objects, and they are not this id.
None of what follows is a score for this product, and none of it is legal advice. The fields below are one vendor's current description of a thread message, and the create sample, the list sample, and the schema sample are not the same object. The counts below that are a 2023 paper about one million conversations with other models. A character count on an example is not a census of your users. A model that never opened your log cannot name the message on the run you stored tonight. They do tell you which numbers people mix up when they try to sound precise about a reply they have not opened.
OpenAI's create response prints id msg_abc123, 10 characters, object thread.message, 14 characters, created_at 1713226573, assistant_id null, thread_id thread_abc123, 13 characters, and run_id null. Role is user, 4 characters. Status is completed. completed_at is 1713226573. The gap between created_at and completed_at is 0. incomplete_at is null. incomplete_details is null. attachments is an empty array. metadata is an empty object. annotations is an empty array. A null run id is not a missing message. The text value is How does AI work? Explain it in simple terms. 45 characters. The request sent that same sentence and role user. The request did not send an id. The header on the example is OpenAI-Beta assistants=v2. v2 is not msg_abc123. A schema example on the same page prints id as the string id, 2 characters, status in_progress, created_at 0, completed_at 0, incomplete_at 0, and incomplete_details reason content_filter. 0 is not 1713226573. 0 is not null. in_progress is not completed. The schema content part is an image_file. The realistic content part is text. An image file id is not the 45-character sentence (OpenAI, Create message).
The list call is a second page, and it is not one message. The realistic list returns two objects, both on thread_abc123, both with run_id null, both with role user, both with status completed. The first id is msg_abc123. The second is msg_abc456, also 10 characters, and not the same id. The second text is Hello, what is AI?, 18 characters. 18 is not 45. Both created_at values are 1699016383, and both completed_at values are 1699016383. The gap between the two messages is 0. The gap between the create sample's 1713226573 and the list sample's 1699016383 is 14,210,190 seconds, which is 164 days, 11 hours, 16 minutes, and 30 seconds. These are examples. They are not one thread's clock. first_id is msg_abc123. last_id is msg_abc456. has_more is false. The schema example on the list page sets first_id and last_id both to msg_abc123, while the object inside data has id equal to the string id. The cursor does not match the object. 2 messages are not the default limit. limit defaults to 20, and the maximum is 100. 2 is not 20, and 20 is not 100. order defaults to desc, and the other name is asc. Two names. desc is not asc (OpenAI, List messages).
The enums are short, and the samples use one cell of each. Role is user or assistant. Two names. Both realistic messages are user. user is not assistant. A message you inserted with role assistant is still a message you wrote. It is not evidence that a run produced it, and the create page says run_id is null when the message was created manually. Status is in_progress, incomplete, or completed. Three names. incomplete reasons are content_filter, max_tokens, run_cancelled, run_expired, and run_failed. Five names. The realistic samples store incomplete_details null. Null is not content_filter. The schema sample stores content_filter while its status is in_progress. A reason on an in-progress schema object is not a completed message. Content part types are text, image_file, image_url, and refusal. Four names. Image detail is auto, low, or high. Three names. The image URL types named on the create page are jpeg, jpg, png, gif, and webp. Five names. 5 is not 4, and 4 is not 2. Metadata allows 16 key-value pairs. Keys are at most 64 characters. Values are at most 512 characters. 512 is not 64. 16 is not 2. An empty metadata object is not 16 pairs, and it is not a place to hide the run id you forgot to store.
The study people reach for when they want a conversation count did not open this log. Lianmin Zheng, Wei-Lin Chiang, Ying Sheng, Tianle Li, and their co-authors introduce LMSYS-Chat-1M. The abstract says one million real-world conversations with 25 models, collected from 210K unique IP addresses. The table prints 1,000,000 conversations, 25 models, 210,479 users, and 154 languages. 210K is not the integer 210,479. An IP address in the abstract is not the column the table headers as users. The introduction says over 1 million. The table prints 1,000,000. Over is not the integer. A later sentence says more than 150 languages. 154 is not 150. Average turns per sample are 2.0. Average prompt tokens are 69.5. Average response tokens are 214.5. 69.5 is not 214.5. 2.0 is not a message id. The human-preference cell is No (Zheng, Chiang, Sheng, Li, and co-authors, LMSYS-Chat-1M).
The other rows in that table are not the LMSYS row. Anthropic HH is 338,704 conversations, 1 model, 143 users, 1 language, 2.3 turns, 18.9 prompt tokens, and 78.9 response tokens. 1 is not 25. 2.3 is not 2.0. 18.9 is not 69.5. OpenAssistant is 66,497 conversations, 13,500 users, 35 languages, 36.9 prompt tokens, and 214.2 response tokens. 214.2 is not 214.5. 35 is not 154. Chatbot Arena conversations are 33,000, 20 models, 13,383 users, 96 languages, 1.2 turns, 52.3 prompt tokens, and 189.5 response tokens. 20 is not 25. 1.2 is not 2.0. 33,000 is not 1,000,000. 96 is not 154. None of these rows is msg_abc123, and none of them is a null run id.
The flagged counts do not partition, and the F1 cells do not match the sentence that says the fine-tune matches GPT-4. They flag 54,427 conversations and call that 5%. 5% of 1,000,000 is 50,000. 54,427 is not 50,000. The difference is 4,427, which the paper does not print. The category columns are sexual 33,968, harassment 21,167, violence 9,499, hate 3,591, and self-harm 863. The sum is 69,088. 69,088 is not 54,427. The paper says a conversation can violate more than one category, so the columns are not a split of the 54,427. Do not cite the sum as the flagged total. Zero-shot micro-F1 is 0.71 for GPT-4, 0.65 for the fine-tuned moderator, 0.45 for GPT-3.5, 0.36 for the moderation API, 0.35 for Vicuna-7B, 0.32 for Claude-2, and 0.00 for Llama-2-7B-chat. 0.65 minus 0.35 is 0.30, which is the 30% they name. The one-shot cells are 0.69, 0.70, 0.64, 0.50, 0.30, and 0.01. 0.70 minus 0.50 is 0.20. 0.20 is not 0.30. 0.65 is not 0.71. 0.70 is not 0.69. The sentence that says the moderator matches GPT-4 is not an equal pair of cells. GPT-4's one-shot score is 0.02 below its zero-shot score. Claude-2 also drops, from 0.32 to 0.30. 0.02 is not an improvement. 0.36 is not 0.35.
The smaller sets are not the million. They take the top 1,000 flagged messages in each of five categories, plus 1,000 ordinary messages, plus 3,000 ShareGPT conversations. 5 times 1,000, plus 1,000, plus 3,000, is 9,000. The paper does not print 9,000. The evaluation set is 110 toxic messages, about 20 per category, plus 25 non-toxic messages. 5 times 20 is 100. 100 is not 110. 110 plus 25 is 135. The paper does not print 135. From 10 models they take the top 5 jailbreak attempts, and they do print the product: 50. That one adds. The success rates on those 50 are 16%, 18%, 34%, 34%, 66%, and 74%. 16 plus 18 is 34. The paper does not print that sum, and the sum is not a seventh model. 74 is not 66. 66 is not 34. Two instruction subsets are 45,000 and 39,000 conversations. 45,000 plus 39,000 is 84,000. 84,000 is not 1,000,000. A topic sample of 100,000 English conversations drops prompts under 32 characters or over 1,536, clusters into 20, and shows 100 prompts from each cluster to a model. 20 times 100 is 2,000. The paper does not print 2,000. 32 is not 1,536. 45 characters on a sample message is not 69.5 tokens, and it is not 32.
Do the three proofs on one real message, in the log that actually holds it. First, the binding. Copy the message id, the thread id, the role, the status, the text, the run id, and the assistant id. If run_id is null, write null. If assistant_id is null, write null. If attachments is empty, write empty. Do not paste a run id onto a message the create page says was written by hand. Do not paste the 45-character sentence onto a message whose text is 18 characters. Do not infer role assistant because the paragraph sounds like a model. Second, the other message. A different message, with a different id, or a different text, is not this one. msg_abc456 is already that second example, and it is not msg_abc123 even though the timestamps match. A table of a million conversations is not that second message. Third, the other thread. A list that belongs to someone else does not contain this message id. If the only store is a single shared thread and you cannot say whose customer it is, write that. A tenant you cannot name is the finding.
Three moves feel like the proof and are a second problem. Creating a message with role assistant because the log was embarrassing, before you have copied the id. The create call will store a new id, and it will store run_id null. The new row does not tell you which message the customer saw. Quoting 1,000,000 or 2.0 or 0.71 because one of them looks precise, while the message you were asked about is one row, and the conversations that produced those figures had not opened your thread. Asking the model which message it appended. The model will produce another paragraph. It will not open the log. A file you have not kept, while the customer is arguing about an attachment, is which file did that message attach?. Opening that screen does not name this message's text.
The path is ordinary when an operator can open one customer's documents without opening the next customer's documents as the way to prove it. Haystack is one search layer across documents, data lakes, and repositories. The shape that matters here is one customer's documents, distinct from the next customer's. That case is not a message ledger. Nothing in that sentence is a headcount, a duration, or a result figure. If the only control on the screen returns a paragraph and will not name a message id, you do not have this proof. You have a sentence.
There is a version of this afternoon where hiring the path is the wrong purchase. Nothing is in production, because the feature has not reached a customer. No model is being called. The request was not logged, so there is no message to name. A customer has already seen another customer's data. Naming an id does not close a leak. The wrong value was already a write. Or no metric was ever named, so a rescue would have nothing to move. The criteria for a system that is already in front of customers and still cannot show the message sit on the page for an AI pilot failed to reach production. That page is the symptom. It does not name this message, and it does not turn 2.0 into a role.
When the reply is already in front of a customer and the log cannot name the message, the missing object is specific. The message id, the role, and the text, a different message that is not that one, and a stored run rather than a recollection. An AI pilot failed to reach production engagement is for the system that is already in front of customers and cannot yet show those three: audit in the first one to two weeks, finished in 8 to 12 weeks, scoped after the audit, unpaid if the agreed metric does not move, rollout behind a human-review gate. The message you failed to store tonight is the kind of case the harness has to include, or the next release will answer and still be unable to say which message was appended. The harness is AI evaluation and observability. An AI integration sprint is the shape where the acceptance sentence can require the message id on every stored call. If you do not yet know whether the pilot can be saved, a two-week AI readiness assessment hands you the findings either way. The free production-readiness diagnostic is the short way to see whether you are looking at a missing message, a null run id, or a system that has not reached a customer. Those are the terms. They are not 45, and they are not 1,000,000.
The intent a charge opened, and the check a commit reported, are different objects: which intent did that charge open? and which check did that commit report?. Do not record either on this page. A payment intent id is not a message id. A check conclusion is not a role.
Before you tell them the assistant said it, do the three proofs and write the ids. Name the message, the role, and the text, or write that the run id was null. Show a different message that is not that one. Show another thread that does not hold it. Do not ask the model which message it was, and do not cite a million conversations in place of the id. A paper can tell you how other people's chats were counted, including the 30% that is 0.30 on one pair of cells and not 0.20 on the next. The binding is the message you can defend.
Questions
You stop treating the reply as something a run appended, and you stop asking the model which message it was, until you can name the message id, the role, and the text, show a different message whose id or text is not this one, and show that you stored the run. If the message stored a null run id, write that.
No. A million conversations in someone else's dataset is not the id on this message. A message you can defend is the id, the role, and the text on this stored call, or a written line that the run id was null. 2.0 turns in one table is not role assistant, and 45 characters on a sample is not your customer's text.
When nothing is in production, when no model is being called, when the request was not logged, when a customer has already seen another customer's data, when the wrong value was already a write, or when no metric was ever named.
