Which purpose did that upload name?

A customer says the answer used the policy, or says the model trained on a file you have never uploaded. Do not treat the reply as the file, and do not ask the model which purpose it was, until you can name the upload. Tonight, three proofs, in a log you stored. Name the purpose that upload named: the file id, the purpose, and the byte count. If the log stored no file, write that. Show a different file whose id, or whose purpose, is not this one. Show another project's list that does not hold this file. If any of the three needs the person who wired the request, you have not named the purpose. You have a paragraph and a guess.

This is the File object on an upload. It is not the file a store accepted. Which file did that store accept? is a vector-store file id, a status, and a usage in bytes. A store can accept a file while this upload's purpose is a different string, and a vector-store id is not this file id. It is not the note an invoice issued. Which note did that invoice issue? is a credit note id. It is not the rule a scan named. Which rule did that scan name? is a rule id. It is not the job a fine-tune finished. Which job did that fine-tune finish? is a job id. A purpose string is none of those.

None of what follows is a score for the product you are running, and none of it is legal advice. The objects below are the examples on OpenAI's files reference and on the supervised fine-tuning guide. The samples that share a filename shape do not share an id. A training-token count on a sample job is not the purpose the upload named tonight.

The upload page prints two responses that do not share a purpose. The schema example has id equal to the string id. 2 characters. bytes is 0. created_at is 0. expires_at is 0. filename is the string filename. purpose is assistants. status is uploaded. status_details is the string status_details. The request beside the other example sends purpose fine-tune, a file named mydata.jsonl, anchor created_at, and expires_after seconds 2592000. The response id is file-abc123. 11 characters. 11 is not 2. object is file. bytes is 120000. 120000 is not 0. created_at is 1677610602. expires_at is 1680202602. 1680202602 minus 1677610602 is 2592000 seconds. 2592000 divided by 86400 is 30. The page does not print 30 next to that subtraction, and the subtraction does land on the maximum. filename is mydata.jsonl. 12 characters. purpose is fine-tune. status is processed. uploaded is not processed. assistants is not fine-tune. The page says expires_after seconds must be between 3600 and 2592000. 3600 is 1 hour. 2592000 divided by 3600 is 720. 720 is not 30, because 720 counts hours. The sample sits on the maximum, not the minimum. The same page says files with purpose batch expire after 30 days by default, and all other files persist until they are deleted. The sample purpose is fine-tune, not batch. An expiry on this response exists because the request sent expires_after. It is not the batch default. Individual files can be up to 512 MB. The batch path allows 200 MB. The project can store up to 2.5 TB. 512 is not 200. 200 is not 2.5. 120000 is not 512, and it is not 200. Uploads are rate-limited to 1000 requests per minute. Vector-store attachment is 2000 files per minute. 1000 is not 2000. The list default limit is 10000, and the maximum is also 10000. 10000 is not 1000, and 10000 is not 2000 (OpenAI, Files).

The purpose lists do not match each other. The upload body allows assistants, batch, fine-tune, vision, user_data, and evals. Six names. The file object allows assistants, assistants_output, batch, batch_output, fine-tune, fine-tune-results, vision, and user_data. Eight names. 6 is not 8. The names in both lists are assistants, batch, fine-tune, vision, and user_data. Five names. evals is on the upload list and not on the object list. assistants_output, batch_output, and fine-tune-results are on the object list and not on the upload list. 5 plus 1 is 6. 5 plus 3 is 8. The page does not print those sums. You cannot send evals and then expect the object vocabulary to contain it, and you cannot upload a file whose purpose is assistants_output. status is uploaded, processed, or error. Three names. uploaded is 8 characters. processed is 9. error is 5. 8 is not 9. The schema example is uploaded. The fine-tune example is processed. error is in neither response. order on the list defaults to desc. asc is not desc.

The list samples are a third pair of files, and they do not match the upload. One example's data array holds a single object whose id is the string id, bytes 0, purpose assistants, while first_id is file-abc123 and last_id is file-abc456. The id inside data is not first_id. 2 characters is not 11. The other list example prints two files and no status_details. file-abc123 has bytes 175, created_at 1613677385, expires_at 1677614202, filename salesOverview.pdf, purpose assistants, status processed. salesOverview.pdf is 17 characters. file-abc456 has bytes 140, created_at 1613779121, the same expires_at 1677614202, filename puppy.jsonl, purpose fine-tune, status processed. puppy.jsonl is 11 characters, the same length as the id, and not an id. 175 plus 140 is 315. 315 is not 120000. 175 is not 140. 1613779121 minus 1613677385 is 101736 seconds: 1 day, 4 hours, 15 minutes, and 36 seconds. The page does not print that gap. Both rows share expires_at 1677614202. 1677614202 minus 1677610602, the upload example's created_at, is 3600 seconds. 3600 is the minimum expiry, and it is measured from a timestamp that is not this list row's created_at. 1677614202 minus 1613677385 is 63936817 seconds: 740 days, 13 minutes, and 37 seconds. The page does not print 63936817. 740 days is not 30 days. A shared expiry is not a shared purpose. assistants on the pdf is not fine-tune on the jsonl. has_more is false. data length is 2 in that example and 1 in the schema example. 2 is not 1, and 2 is not the default limit 10000.

Delete prints the same object string as a live file. The schema example has id equal to the string id, deleted true, and object file. The response example has id file-abc123, object file, and deleted true. object file on a deletion is the same object string as object file on the upload. A deleted flag is not a purpose. The page says delete removes the file from all vector stores. That sentence does not print a byte count, and it does not say the vector-store file id is this id. A store that accepted a different id is which file did that store accept?. Opening that attachment does not name this purpose.

The fine-tuning guide uses a different file, and it does not repair the files page. The training upload in that guide is file-RCnFCYRhFDcq1aHxiYkBHw. 27 characters. 27 is not 11. bytes is 1058. 1058 is not 120000, and 1058 is not 175. created_at is 1746484901. The job id is ftjob-uL1VKpwx7maorHNbOiDwFIn6. 30 characters. The job's created_at is 1746484925. 1746484925 minus 1746484901 is 24 seconds. The page does not print 24. finished_at is 1746485841. 1746485841 minus 1746484925 is 916 seconds, which is 15 minutes and 16 seconds. The page does not print 916. The model is gpt-4.1-nano-2025-04-14. 23 characters. The fine-tuned model id is 43 characters. 43 is not 23. organization_id is org-abc123. 10 characters. The result file is file-9TLxKY2A8tC5YE1RULYxf6. Also 27 characters, the same length as the training file, and not the same string. n_epochs is 10. batch_size is 1. 10 is not 1. One hyperparameters block prints learning_rate_multiplier 1. The block under it prints 1.0. The integer 1 is not the characters 1.0. trained_tokens is 1700. 1700 is not 1058. The page does not print the quotient. seed is 1935755117. The guide says the minimum number of examples is 10, and that it sees improvements from 50 to 100 examples. 10 on n_epochs is not 10 examples, even though the integer matches. 50 is not 10. 100 is not 50. A checkpoint on the same guide has id ftckpt_zc4Q7MP6XxulcVzj4MZdwsAB. 31 characters. created_at is 1519129973, which is earlier than the training file. 1746484901 minus 1519129973 is 227354928 seconds: 2631 days, 10 hours, 8 minutes, and 48 seconds. The page does not print that gap. step_number is 2000. full_valid_loss is 0.134. full_valid_mean_token_accuracy is 0.874, which is 87.4 percent. 0.874 is not 0.134. The page does not print 87.4 percent. The job id on that checkpoint sample is ftjob-abc123, which is not ftjob-uL1VKpwx7maorHNbOiDwFIn6. The guide says the platform is no longer open to new users, that eligible customers can create jobs until January 6, 2027, that gpt-4.1-nano-2025-04-14 shuts down on October 23, 2026, and that gpt-4.1-2025-04-14 and gpt-4.1-mini-2025-04-14 shut down on January 14, 2027. October 23, 2026 to January 6, 2027 is 75 days. January 6 to January 14 is 8 days. October 23 to January 14 is 83 days. October 23 to October 30, 2026 is 7 days. The page does not print 75, 8, 83, or 7. It also says completed models are assessed across 13 safety categories. 13 is not 6, and 13 is not 8. None of these is purpose fine-tune on file-abc123 (OpenAI, Supervised fine-tuning).

Do the three proofs on one real upload, in the project that actually holds it. First, the binding. Copy the file id, the purpose, the byte count, the filename, and the status. If bytes is null, write null. If expires_at is null, write null, and write that you did not send an expiry. Do not copy 120000 from a sample onto a live row, and do not copy 1058 because a guide used it. Second, the other file. A different id, even with the same purpose, is not this one. A list whose first_id does not match the id inside data is not that second file until you have opened both. A token count is not that second file. Third, the other project. A list that belongs to someone else does not contain this id. If the only list is one shared key, write that. A tenant you cannot name is the finding.

Three moves feel like the proof and are a second problem. Deleting the file because the purpose was embarrassing, and then describing the missing row as a cleanup. The delete sample keeps object file. It does not change purpose, because it does not print a purpose. Quoting 50 to 100 examples, or 1700 trained tokens, because they look precise, while the upload you were asked about is one id, and the guide that printed them had already used a file id the files page does not print. Asking the model which purpose the upload had. The model will pick a name from the list of six. It will not open the file object. A vector-store attachment you have not kept is which file did that store accept?. Opening that attachment does not name this purpose.

The path is ordinary when an operator can open one customer's files without opening the next customer's files as the way to prove it. Haystack is one search layer across documents, data lakes, and repositories, distinct from the next customer's documents. The shape that matters here is one customer's upload you can point at. That case is not a file-purpose ledger. Nothing in that sentence is a headcount, a duration, or a result figure. If the only control on the screen returns a paragraph and will not name a file id, you do not have this proof. You have a sentence.

There is a version of this afternoon where a rescue is the wrong purchase. Nothing is in production. No model is being called. The request was not logged. A customer has already seen another customer's file. The wrong value was already a write. Or no metric was ever named. 120000 on a sample is not your file, and 30 days on a maximum is not a promise that this upload expires, and a purpose of assistants is not a purpose of evals. Hire the work when a live call cannot show the three proofs. Do not hire it to decorate a demo that never stored an id.

When the feature is already live and the log does not store the purpose, the missing object is specific. A record, in an account you administer, of the file id, the purpose, and the byte count, plus a different file that is not that one, plus another project's list that does not hold it. An AI pilot failed to reach production engagement is scoped after an audit, not before it. The audit is the first one to two weeks. The engagement runs eight to twelve weeks. The build is unpaid if the agreed metric does not move. Rollout, when it happens, sits behind a human-review gate. If you do not yet know whether the pilot can be saved, a two-week AI readiness assessment hands you the findings either way. AI evaluation and observability is how you learn, afterwards, whether the cases you saved still name a purpose when the file changes. The guide's 1700 tokens will not be that score. If the first slice is a fixed capability, an AI integration sprint is the shape where the acceptance sentence can require the file id and the purpose on every stored call that used an upload.

Before you tell them which purpose the upload named, do the three proofs and write the id. Name the id, the purpose, and the byte count. Show a different file that is not that one, even if the filename matches. Show another list that does not contain it. Do not paste file-abc123 onto a response whose id is the string id, and do not paste 175 onto a response whose bytes are 120000. The binding is the upload you can defend.

Questions

You stop treating the reply as the file the upload named, and you stop asking the model which purpose it was, until you can name the file id, the purpose, and the byte count, show a different file whose id or purpose is not this one, and show that another project's list does not hold it. If bytes is null, write that.

No. A count of trained tokens on a sample job is not the purpose on this file. A purpose you can defend is the id, the purpose, and the byte count, or a written line that no file was stored. 1700 tokens is not file-abc123, and 120000 bytes on one sample is not 175 on another.

When nothing is in production, when no model is being called, when the request was not logged, when a customer has already seen another customer's file, when the wrong value was already a write, or when no metric was ever named.
